Swayam Siddha Muhurta – Sade Teen Muhurtas in Hindu Astrology

In Hindu Calendar Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (starting of new Samvat year), Vaisakha Shukla Tritiya (Akshay Tritiya), Vijaya Dashmi (Ashwin Shukla Dashmi) and Kartik Shukla Pratipada (half muhurta) are four Tithis which are considered highly auspicious.

These three and a half Muhurtas in Hindu election astrology is called aboojh muhurta. Out of these four Tithis, the first three Tithis are counted as full Muhurtas and the last one i.e. Kartik Shukla Pratipada is counted as a half Muhurta that is why these Muhurtas are called Sadhe Teen Muhurta. These Sadhe Teen Muhurtas are Swayam Siddha Muhurtas or self-proven Muhurtas. So on these four Tithis there is no need to consult the Panchang i.e. Panchang Shuddhi is not considered for starting any new task.

As per traditional Hindu astrology, the Sun (Surya) and Moon (Chandra) are astrologically believed to be at their most exalted position on the day. Each second on the day is highly auspicious. The day can comfortably be chosen for marriages, house warming, opening of new business and shops and for making investment in property and valuable items.

Chaitra Shukla Pratipada – The first day (Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha or waxing phase of moon in Chaitra month (March – April). It is said Lord Brahma begin his creation on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada.  The day is observed as traditional Hindu New Year in North India (vikrami Samvat), Maharashtra (Gudi Padva), and Karnataka (Ugadi).  Also Lord Vishnu took Matasya avatar on this day. Vasant Navratri also begins on this day.

Akshay Tritiya – The third day (Tithi) during the Shukla Paksha/ Bright half of Vishakha month (April – May). This day is known as Parshuram Jayanti. It is also regarded as the beginning of the Treta Yuga. So day is considered auspicious. The day is also known as Akha Teej and Akhatrij. The word Akshay means that which never diminishes, so the things done on this day are considered certain to bring success. So the beginning of an event or purchasing valuables on this day are considered certain to bring luck and success. Hayagriva, Parshuram (the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu) and Nar Narayan incarnated on this day. On this day Veda Vyas and Lord Ganesha began to write Mahabharata.
If no Muhurta is available for marriage, Akshay Tritiya is the popular Muhurta for marriage ceremony.
If Lakshmi puja is done on this day, it brings prosperity. Akshay Tritiya interestingly never gets Kashaya from the lunar calendar like other Tithis sometimes getting vridhi or Kashaya depending upon the movement of sun and moon.
Akshay Tritiya is also called Navanna Parvam. Akshay Tritiya falling on a Rohini star on Monday is considered more auspicious.

Dashmi or Vijaya Dashmi – The tenth day of the Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month (September – October) is also considered as aboojh muhurta. On this day Lord Ram killed Ravan. So this day is celebrated as Ram`s victory over Ravan, the victory of good over bad. Vijaya Dashmi is the indicator of end of rainy season. The Kshatriyas worship their weapons and Brahmin worship their shashtras on this day. 10 day long Durga puja ends with visarjan of maa Durga idols on this day. Aprajita Pujan and Shami pujan are done on this day.

Half Muhurta
Kartik Shukla Pratipada – The first day (Tithi) of bright half of Kartik month. Kartika Shukla Pratipada is included in one of the Sadhe Teen Muhurtas, the Swayam Siddha Muhurta for starting a new business or for buying a new vehicles etc. or Grah Pravesh or constructing a new house etc. if proper Muhurta for any of these events is not available. It is considered the beginning of New Year in some parts of India. This is considered half Muhurtas. On Kartik Shukla Pratipada Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Parvat on His little finger and saved the people of Braj from the heavy rain fall caused by Indra.  Govardhan Pooja is celebrated on this day.
