CHAUGHADIA MUHURTA

Muhurta is essentially a measure of time which refers to the application of Vedic astrology wisdom in determining the auspicious time for starting an event so that it goes through in all probability smoothly and without hurdles. Simply put, it is the time we ‘elect’ (or select) to begin important events in life.
Muhurta' is a vast subject in itself but 'Chaughadia-muhurtas' provide a quick and quite effective reference table to any person who does not have access to a well-qualified Vedic astrologer or does not have time to consult him/her for any reason. You may define the 'Chaughadia-muhurtas' as general public's election astrology.
Synonyms of Chaughadia are #Chogadia, #Chaughadia, #Chaturshtika
Cho-Gadhiya means four Ghadi (4 घडी)/Ghati – (Ghadi (now used for a clock in Hindi) is an ancient measure for calculations of time in India roughly equivalent to 24 minutes. Cho-Gadhiya means four Ghadi which totals to 96 minutes. Most of Chaughadia are of approximate 96 minutes duration)
Where 1Ghati (घडी) / = 24 minutes
So 4Ghati (घडी) = 4*24 = 96 minutes
So, 96 Minutes of time in a day is known as one Chaughadia.

Chaughadia is normally used for checking intraday auspicious time to start new work. Traditionally Chaughadia is used for travel muhurtas but due to its simplicity it is used for any muhurta.
In Hindu System day start with Sunrise and ends on next Sunrise. The period between Sunrise to next Sunrise is divided into two parts – Day and Night
Daytime – also known as Dinamana the period from sunrise to sunset
Nighttime – also known as Ratrimana, the period from sunset to sunrise.
This way 24 hours of a day are divided into 16time segments of approximately one and a half hours each (i.e., approx. 3.75 Ghati). Each of these time segments is called a Chaughadia due to its approximate duration of 3.75 Ghati. These Chaughadia are of 7 types and are either good or bad or medium (neutral) in nature.
Each period is divided into eight Chaughadia. The daytime difference is arrived at by calculating the difference between Sunrise and Sunset and dividing the same by 8.
8th part so got is called Day Chaughadia
Same way, eight equal divisions are done for time duration from sun-set to next day’s sun-rise (‘Ratrimana’) and allotted to 7 types of night-time ‘Chaughadia’ in a pre-determined order decided by weekday. Again, six ‘Chaughadia’ get 1 division each in their share while one ‘Chaughadia’ gets 2 divisions.
There are total seven Chaughadia muhurtas out of which four are auspicious Chaughadia, Amrit, Shubh, Labh and Char, to start auspicious work.
The rest three are considered bad or inauspicious Chaughadia, Rog, Kaal and Udveg, should be avoided.
The time between sunrise and sunset is called day Chaughadia and the time between sunset and next day sunrise is called night Chaughadia.
All-important works should be commenced during a favorable Chaughadia
Amrit, Shubh and Labh are favorable Chaughadia s.
Char is an intermediate Chaughadia.

Udveg, Rog and Kaal are unfavorable Chaughadias.

The seven types of ‘Chaughadia’ are as follows:
Division
Chaughadia Name
Ruling Plant

Works recommended
1.
‘Udveg’ (Anxiety)
Sun

2.

6.

7.

Thus, to determine a good time to commence/initiate important works or to start a new venture or to start anything auspicious - select a good ‘Chaughadia’. Any good work or travel should be preferably started in a Good Chaughadia only.

Any Chaughadia division could be good or bad depending on the weekday and time of the day. Scriptures say that if a work is started in good ‘Chaughadia’ and other Muhurta determining factors (such as ‘Tithi’, ‘Yoga’, Nakshatra’ etc.) are also favourable, it is almost certain to get success in that work or effort.
The sequence of day-time and night-time Chaughadias varies for each week day. However, the sequence is fixed and does not change for each week day. For example, the sequence for Monday is different to that for Tuesday, which in turn is different to that for Wednesday. But the sequence for each Monday is the same, as also for each Tuesday.
The first Chaughadia of the day is decided based on the ruling deity of the day. Thus, on Sunday the first Chaughadia Muhurta would be ruled by the Sun followed by Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter and Sun. The prevailing Lord during the Chaughadia division makes it bad or good.
